Recognising intersectionality in practice

Working with children in the youth justice system requires a thoughtful and inclusive approach. Many children have diverse identities and lived experiences that shape their journey through the system. This section brings together resources to support staff in working effectively and sensitively with children who may face additional barriers — including minority ethnic, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children, girls, and neurodivergent children.

It’s important to recognise intersectionality — where different aspects of a child’s identity overlap and may increase their experiences of disadvantage. Inclusive practice involves seeing the whole child and shaping support around their individual strengths, needs and circumstances.
